Hi Writers!
Seven years ago, my then-third-grader, a budding writer, lost access to her favorite summer writing camp. I struggled to find a class for her until it dawned on me, "Hey, I'm a writer. I love to teach and have been attending writing classes for years. Why don't I give this a shot?" After passing the word around that summer I held two successful one-week sessions of Camp Write On! (said like “Right on!”) Since then, I’ve added camps for winter break, school days off, the strike edition 2019, Zoom quarantine edition Spring 2020 and continuing it last summer for CWO! 2.0, Zoom style. This summer I plan to hold both Zoom and live in the parks.
My purpose to help kids tap into the right side of their brain and let their creative ideas fly. All they need is a pen and paper. I don't want them to be overly concerned about their handwriting or how to properly construct sentences nor spell words. Instead, I encourage them to write from their minds. Also, in camps, they’re able to exchange ideas with their peers and read aloud to our small audience while building confidence in their own work.
I’ve been writing since I could put a pen to paper, whether it be picture stories in the form of a graphic novel or full-length books. I'm a former features writer, columnist, and copy editor, but my true passion lies in fiction writing. I've written over six novels and am actively seeking representation. I have a BA in journalism from Arizona State and for a time, was in the English writing program at the University of Iowa.
